How Are Dental Veneers Applied?

If you aren’t happy with your smile, one of the most effective ways of getting the smile that you envision is through veneers. The dental veneers application process is a simple and effective approach that your dentist can use to leave you with whiter teeth. Veneers can also correct teeth that are stained, broken, chipped or crooked. Often, dental veneers can be applied in two office visits, depending on the equipment used by your dentist. Most insurance companies won’t cover the costs of veneers if they are only for cosmetic reasons, so you should talk with a financial representative at the dental office to determine costs and payment options.

The evaluation

You will go to your dentist for an evaluation. The same approach doesn’t work for everyone and that goes the same with dental veneers. When veneers are placed during the dental veneer application process, they can’t be removed. You should feel free to talk with your dentist about the process, telling him or her your expectations. Your dentist will check to see if dental veneers will work for your specific situation.

Shaping the teeth

Your dentist will carefully remove a small amount of enamel from the front of your teeth. The amount might vary, but it usually is about a sixteenth of an inch. Your dentist will remove any evidence of decay and will carefully shape your teeth to ensure that they are free from any visible chips and gaps, so they will be ready for the dental veneers application process.

Choosing the shade

Not everyone’s teeth are the same. Lighter shades of veneers do create a whiter smile, but you don’t want a smile that is so white it doesn’t look natural. In most cases, a shade of veneers only two or three shades lighter can make a dramatic difference.

Making the veneers

Your dentist will make an impression of your teeth to ensure that the veneers are the right shapes and sizes. An impression putty or optical cameras will be used to get precise models of your teeth. The impression made this way will be used to get a precise model of your teeth, so your dentist can create a veneer that will fit properly. The dentist will then either make the veneers in-house or order them from a dental laboratory. If they are ordered from a lab, it can take up to two weeks for them to be finished and delivered. Until you get the actual veneers, you will have a temporary covering to protect your teeth.

The dental veneers application

Your dentist will carefully evaluate your new dental veneers, checking their size and shape, and making sure they are a great fit. Using a specialized bonding material, your new veneers will be glued in place onto your teeth. After the dental veneers application is complete, you will need to properly care for them because veneers can be stained. Most dentists recommend that you avoid red wine, tea, sodas, coffee, and other beverages that can cause discoloration and damage to your teeth.
